Toshiba Portege G910 with Windows Mobile 6 Professional

INTRODUCTION
Toshiba has a new one for us, the Portege G910, which aims to be a top choice for business users (especially in Europe) who want to go Windows Mobile. It features two screens, one of which sports the highest resolutions that Windows Mobile can support, 800x480. That's 25% more pixels than found on a VGA screen. But what about the rest of the phone? Does it perform well in daily use, or should Toshiba stick to making Notebooks and X-Ray machines? Read on for our thorough review!

WHAT'S HOT
Let's do a rundown of specifications. The G910 has the commonly used Qualcomm MSM7200 CPU running at 400MHz. It is a triband GSM phone with EDGE/HSDPA, has 256MB ROM and 128MB RAM, WiFi (b & g), aGPS, Bluetooth 2.0, and USB 1.1. The camera on the rear can capture photos at 2MP and includes an LED fill light, while the camera on the front, used for video calls, supports VGA resolution. Powering it all is a 1320mAh battery.

The OLED screen on the from has a resolution of 96x39, so don't expect much data to come through here. This is most useful for screening calls, viewing the time, and checking for new mail notifications. There is a video on the second page to demonstrate this. As an important note - for some reason, this screen is unreadable in sunlight.

Now, a note on the behavior of the OLED screen. When you close the folder of the phone, the OLED screen goes on for 1-5 seconds, depending on how long you have it set in the Power Settings. When you receive a call, it will show the persons name on the screen (again, see the video on the second page for a demo). From there you press the Send button to take the call, or End button to ignore. You can initiate a call with the folder open, then close the folder, and still use the phone. What happens when you open the folder during a call? Nothing. The speakerphone should flip on but it doesn't.

Flipping over to the back we see a cheap-looking leathery texture made from plastic panels. Because everything back here is plastic and not rubber, you'll have to steady the G910 with one hand when using this on a table. The HTC TyTN II, as an example, has a rubbery coating on the bottom that keeps it in place.

COMPARISONS
Shown here from left to right is the BlackJack II, AT&T Tilt, Toshiba G910, iPhone, and Verizon XV6900 (HTC Touch/Vogue). The G910 isn't as big as you'd think. It's about the same width as a BlackJack II, and thinner than the TyTN II.

PURCHASING
The Toshiba Portege G910 can be had for $739.94 over at Smart Mobile Gadgets. The phone is unlocked, so you can use it with any carrier. In the US, you can get up to EDGE data speeds on T-Mobile, and just GPRS speeds on AT&T. It's not likely that we'll see a quadband version issued.
